Eco Awareness
At Horizon, we believe that it is vital that children are eco aware so that they can be part of the change needed for a positive environmental future. Not only do children learn about ecological issues within the curriculum, this knowledge and interest is also enhanced through a wide range of opportunities and avenues.
Gardens and Allotments:
Our children, with a lot of support from the Friends of Horizon, develop and maintain our gardens and allotments. These are home to a wide range of wildlife while adding to the beauty of the school environment for the whole school community. The children grow and nurture a range of fruit and vegetables that are then used to learn how to cook healthily.
The success of our gardens and allotments have been recognised by expert judges who awarded us the Coolings in Bloom Award for Schools 2023.
Recycling and Eco Ambassadors
Children at Horizon regulrarly raise their awareness of the importance of recycling by using our recycling centre. Eco ambassadors ensure that we recycle daily and take charge of this in their classrooms.
Our eco ambassadors also ensure that power isn't wasted in their classrooms.
Looking After our Environment
Some children choose to help to look after our environment in other ways. For example, litter picking in their spare time.
Using our Natural Environment in Creative Ways
Our children use our woodlands and outdoor learning spaces across the curriculum.
They use found objects for creative play at playtimes.
