Our Curriculum
At Horizon Primary Academy, we believe that every child can achieve their very best. Our curriculum is designed to work closely with our teaching and learning model, ensuring that all children experience success and are equipped for the world around them. We are committed to providing exciting learning opportunities that nurture curiosity, develop knowledge and build the confidence needed to flourish now and in the future.
Our school values of compassion, collaboration and courage are central to all that we do. These values underpin our curriculum and shape the way we learn and grow together. We encourage every child to show compassion towards others, collaborate positively and have the courage to challenge themselves, take risks and celebrate their achievements.
Through our curriculum, we aim to build on the aspirations of our families and wider community. We want children to believe that they can achieve highly and positively influence the world they live in. We support this by cultivating a mindset where effort, resilience and teamwork are celebrated and where every child is encouraged to contribute their ideas and talents with confidence.
We believe that today’s children must understand their role as active global citizens. Our curriculum encourages children to engage with global issues, environmental responsibility and social change. Through enquiry, discussion and thoughtful questioning, we enable them to explore big ideas and consider the part they play in shaping a sustainable future.
We have a strong sense of connection with our local community and seek to extend children’s understanding of their place in London, across the United Kingdom and within the wider world. We broaden horizons by offering enriching experiences, purposeful projects and meaningful links beyond school life.
We are committed to creating a vocabulary-rich curriculum. Drawing on our simple model of teaching, we explicitly teach subject-specific vocabulary and enable children to use language confidently in speaking, writing and wider learning. Talk is a key feature of our approach—children learn collaboratively, share ideas, debate respectfully and deepen understanding through purposeful discussion.
At Horizon Primary Academy, we embrace and actively reflect the diversity of our community. We ensure that children understand difference, respect the experiences of others and learn about the important contributions made by individuals and groups throughout history and today.
Our ongoing aim is to provide a curriculum that inspires children academically, socially and personally. We want all learners to feel empowered, prepared for the world around them and confident to make a positive difference in the future.
The Horizon Whole-School Curriculum Overview maps out key subjects throughout each year and over the course of each key stage.
