Science

At Horizon Primary Academy, our aim in science is to provide the foundations for understanding the world the children live in and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena.   The children learn how science has changed their lives and how it can be used to explain, predict and analyse why and how things happen.  Our curriculum aims to provide the foundations of learning scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding; this will allow our children to be ready to learn more about science today and in the future as they continue into their next phase of education and possible future employment.

The National Curriculum states that all pupils: “develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them.”  Therefore, the foundations of the Horizon science curriculum are underpinned by the key concepts of function, structure, change, variation, natural processes and properties.  Children progressively build their understanding of these concepts by working scientifically across the science curriculum: observing over time; pattern seeking; identifying, classifying and grouping; comparative and fair testing (controlled investigations); and researching using secondary sources.
