Vision Statement for Design and Technology

Our aim is for all children to have the opportunity to design products that fulfil a given criteria.  They will produce an initial design, consider the materials needed, make and then evaluate their final product.  They are encouraged to work independently, often designing products linked to other areas of the curriculum whilst using a range of materials and learning new skills.

Programme of study for Design and Technology

Design and Technology at Horizon

Every child has the potential to be creative.  At Horizon, we encourage that creativity using a range of materials.....moving objects with cams, pots made of clay, toys using recycled materials, flying kites.  The list is endless.

Many of the skills used encourage teamwork, show respect and empathy towards others and encourage an excellent attitude to learning.  A way of encouraging our Horizon Heart Values.

Design and Technology in Key Stage 1

The children in key stage 1 will have opportunities to be creative in a range of contexts (for example the classroom, home, the outside area and the wider community). They will be taught the knowledge, understanding and skills to design and make products using a range of tools, equipment and materials.

Designing and making will include

  • design
  • make
  • evaluate
  • technical knowledge

Design and Technology in Key Stage

Children will continue to build upon the knowledge, skills and understanding taught in key stage 1.  They will also work in a range of contexts (for example home, school, leisure, culture, enterprise, industry and the wider environment).

Again design and making will include

  • design
  • make
  • evaluate
  • technical knowledge

For key stage 2, these skills will be more complex including the use of electrical systems and computing in their designs.
